Apricot Jam Muffins

I've been baking this morning, and happily made up a batch of Apricot Jam Muffins. It's likely there won't be any left by tomorrow.

As promised, I got the recipe together, and I've put it over on my webpage for you to download. Happy baking! xox

Holiday Sewing and Jam Production

As promised, I've gathered pictures of a few quilted items that I made before Christmas. Two sets of items are just too hard to get photos - darn my propensity to forget the happy snaps!!

First up, I made my Mum a table runner from the lovely striped fabric from Hettie's Patch, and then from the scraps I was able to make up two spiderweb mats:

This is the mat I made for Amy's boyfriend's Mum, and I made another one too for my Mum's bestie, but I neglected to take a picture of that one :-/

And here is the runner for my Mum:

Please excuse the hurried and badly lit picture - I grabbed this as Mum, Amy and I were heading out for a Costco/Ikea shopping adventure!

I also made two spiderweb placemats in red and green reproduction fabrics - one each for my two hairdressers. Yes friends, it takes a village to keep me looking this fabulous :-) But of course I didn't remember to take a picture of them either!

But with the scraps, I then put together a few candle mats for my sweet quilting besties that came for lunch on the Friday before Christmas:

There was another one spare, and I quickly bound that and presented it to Shay when she came over to help with the Gingerbread adventures!

I'm thinking that's all the pre-Christmas quilting that I managed to get done, and I'm sure it's plenty!

Today I've been busy making Apricot Jam. This year our tree was kind enough to wait for a few days after Christmas to begin ripening, so I've been able to work at leisure a little more than usual. I've had so many friends over the last few days, all helping themselves to the lovely apricots - I've picked a bunch of them myself, and the tree is still groaning:

Jam is easy to make, and so far I've only used 3kgs of fruit for our jam - I'll make more tomorrow I'm thinking, and probably give lots away.

I just love that jam funnel in the picture there - it's one of the handiest tools I've ever purchased - saves so much mess! I always sterilise more jars than I'll need - it's a drama to race to find more jars if I run out.

And here are the results of my work for this afternoon. I'm just loving the cute Masons jars I found at a local discount store. There will be more of these in my future, and I'm going to put all my other old glass jars in the recycle bin. I'm finding the cellophane lids just aren't keeping the jam as fresh as they could.

There is still a decent amount of jam from last year left over - another thing on the agenda tomorrow is to make some Apricot Jam Muffins - they are really tasty and DH loves them. When I have an opportunity I'll share the recipe. I think they would be great to use up any kind of jam.

Alrighty, that's it for today - it's time to make dinner. I'll check back in really soon xox

Festive Season Gingerbread

First up, Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all my lovely blog readers.

Things have been super quiet here on the blog - but in my home it has been crazy busy. Getting ready for Christmas Day is always super fun, but it really makes a girl busy in pretty much every hour of each day.

I had a lot of Christmas sewing, shopping and cooking to take care of, and I've taken a few pictures, but I won't share them today - I forgot to take a couple of pictures of some gifts I made, so I'd like to track them down and share soon.

Today I wanted to share this year's Gingerbread House. Each year it's a tradition to get busy baking, and this year was no exception. Shay even came over to help in the dark hours ... I'm sure she'll share details at some point :-) ...

Here is this year's creation:

I just loved putting it together, and it was so much fun to have Shay's help. This year I had planned a much more elaborate construction, but I didn't really leave myself enough time. This colonial style house is my favourite stand by, but I think I'll have a go at the fancy house while I'm on holidays - and Marty says he's going to help too!

Laziness and lack of time meant that rather than used crushed up boiled sweets to make the windows, this time I used cut up gelatine sheets and glued them in place with icing. IMHO it looks really good, and the criss-cross pattern gives it a leaded glass look. As I always do, I've used a little battery operated string of LED's to light up the interior. Next year we're thinking we might make up some furniture and a Christmas tree to put inside. How fun!

Should you like to have a go at making your own gingerbread house, I've put my favourite gingerbread and royal icing recipe on my website as a free download. I haven't put a template up there yet, but I will work on a simple one for you. Just give me some time.

Have fun and let me know how you go!

Just over two weeks until the big day!

Can you believe there are only just over two weeks until Christmas? I bet you've all got your list prepared and are well on the way to completing your shopping. I really wish I could say the same - I haven't made a list, and I've only bought one present - and that's only because my sweet brother gave me the coordinates of the exact thing he wanted. I strongly dislike being so disorganised in this way, but for some reason I just can't get my head around the Christmas list until Amy's birthday (which is this weekend) is sorted, and then I run at Xmas like a crazy lady!

But you don't want to hear me whine about my disorganisation - so here's some quilty content: Though stitching time has been limited, I've gotten a little more of the Montmellick project together:

It's looking kinda cute right? Once the other two sides are in place, I'll work on the paper pieced stars that will go into the blank squres. That part will definitely be time consuming. Once that's done, there's a final border print, and rather than go for something like the designer chose, I think I'll put a repeat of the border that frames the inner applique block. I'm pretty sure I have enough *crossed fingers*

The quilt is going to be a little smaller than expected, more like a wall hanging size, and I've toyed with the idea of making it larger, but I have a feeling I'll be lazy :-)

Just now I threw the quilt on the floor in the lounge to take the picture, and it's getting pretty dark outside. Without all the light coming through the front window, it's so much easier to see the Xmas tree and all the decorations on it, so I snapped a pic for you ...

One of these days I'll take the time to learn how to take better pictures with fancy effects, but not today :-) You can see though how completely full the tree is ... there's barely room for another single ornament, and that's how I like it! Note to self ... straighten those faux candles ... très messy.

Now, I'm sure I had a whole bunch of things I wanted to tell you about, but under pressure, I can't remember any of them - so that either means I have too much bouncing around in my head right now, or I'm completely losing my mind. Should I remember any of the Very. Important. Things. I'll check back in with you ...

Chatter soon!

Snippets ...

On Tuesday two of my besties and I went on a little road trip. We headed over to a shop I've never been to before - Widebacks. They're on the absolute opposite side of town, so it was quite a revelation to me. Working in a quilt store means that I have little need to visit other shops, but it was a fun trip! Wendy found the perfect backing she was looking for, and I accidentally found two things I could use:

The double wide backing you see there will be perfect should I ever finish Camo's aviation themed quilt - and it was a bargain at $15.00 per metre. And of course I love all the patterns by my sweet friend Michele Hill, and Arabesque just grabbed me! I have a few of her patterns now, but I haven't actually made one ... you just can't rush these things :-)

We made another quilt shop stop so Vicki could pick up a particular batting she was after, but I didn't break out the credit card at all. And before we stopped for lunch, we headed into some particularly dangerous territory ... The Christmas Shop on Goodwood Road!

Goodness me, my mettle was tested when I was faced with this wall of Nutcrackers! I have no clue how I managed it, but I didn't buy any of them ... though I was sorely tempted by the wind-up guy in the middle with the red base. He's so very cute.

But I can confess that I wasn't a complete angel, I did bring two items home with me ...

I just loved these glass ornaments, they're very regal looking. It would have been nice to have a bunch of them, but the tree is groaning already. Also, I'm TRYING to practice restraint as I've put some Christmas funds aside to hunt down a new tree in the post-Xmas sales - ours is starting to look a little spindly and I've been 'gunna' replace it for a few years now.

Last up in the shopping dept, while at work yesterday I picked up two fabrics. I really wanted the remnants of a strippy fabric the girls have been using in class to make table runners. It's my hope to also make a table runner for someone on my gift list:

And the fabric on the right is a gorgeous linen. The moment I saw it, I knew it would be perfect to make up a wrap skirt. I purchased the pattern from The Drapery when they were at guild not so long ago, and I've been looking for the perfect summery fabric ever since. I wanted to share a pic of the pattern with you, but my cutting table is such a mess that I can't put my hands on it right now. So, click here to check it out.

Finally, lest you think I've been wasting all my energy on retail therapy, I can share that I've actually finished the red applique border on Montmellick, and I've actually started cutting for the last instalment:

Obviously I still have a long way to go, but I'll be chipping away at it some more today ...

Chatter soon! xox

Three down, one to go ...

In stolen moments, I've been chipping away at the Montmellick Di Ford mystery. I'm still humming along on border number 5, and the finish line for this part is growing so close:

Just one side left to go, and I can get busy putting part 6 together. Part 6 includes a pieced star border, and then a final border print. If you haven't seen it, you can check it out on the Quilt Mania website.

But before I get busy on part 6, I'm going to spend some time sorting out the sewing room, it's getting kind of messy and I find it hard to sew when I'm edgy in my environment. I may also have to send some of my fabric out into the world. I have Way. Too. Much. Fabric. Not sure I ever thought I'd say that!!

Alrighty, I have some chores to take care of, then it's back to the appliqué, chatter soon!

A spiderweb production line :-)

First up, if you thought I might be tempted by more Christmas Nutcrackers when faced with them at the store, you might be right ...

However when you're faced with a group of them like this ... can't prove anything ... right?? :-)

Ugh, just noticed that my fern needs a little 'greenhouse' time. It's amazing what you pick up in a photo but can ignore in real life!

But back to the quilty component of this post: This past week I have been producing spider-web place-mats at a rate of knots!

Here we have a gratuitous 'while quilting' photo. I have to say that even though I'll never have mad photography skillz, I'm enjoying my new iPhone and the pictures it takes a good deal better than my old one. Though this 6+ is huge in my small hands!

I made three different colourways - these ones are largely reproduction fabrics. The eagle eyed among you will recognise one of the red fabrics from my Farmers Wife quilt.

These ones using some of the Jinny Beyer fat quarters that I won (I think last year) at our guild show.

And these ones using more of the Jinny Beyer fat quarters. Though they scarcely look different from the previous picture, there are subtle differences :-)

All the Jinny Beyer mats have used Jinny Beyer fat quarters as the backing, so I've made a bit of a dent in the pack I received :-)

Here are the mats ready to head off to their new homes. I'll be passing them along today, and only just finished them yesterday - I always manage to cut things close to my self imposed deadlines!

Not sure what I'll work on next, probably get busy on the Di Ford mystery again, but the rest of the week is looking pretty chaotic. I'll check in when I can! xox

Catching up ...

On Sunday last week I was finally able to visit with my quilt at the Guild Show. Because the DH is away, I had to take Camo with me after he was done with tennis training. To sweeten the deal for him, I promised to take him to Krispy Creme afterward. I probably shouldn't have given him that information before we went to the show ... the whole time we were there I was hearing "Can we go now ... Can we go now ..." *sigh*

I managed to get a few happy snaps, so here's a close up for you:

During the week I had a call from our wonderful FOQ organiser Bron, she had the happy news that my quilt is one of those selected to represent South Australia at AQC in Melbourne in April. Isn't that just the best thing? Really the cherry on my sundae :-)

I've been busy during the week working on a bunch of spider-web place-mats, and I'll share a picture with you in my next post. I probably could have done so today, but this girl of little brains just forgot to take a snap or two.

But I did manage to take a few (a very few) pictures on an outing yesterday! Shay, Amy and I ventured to Costco!! It only opened here in Adelaide on Wednesday for the first time ever, and as soon as the schedule allowed, we were there with bells on! Definitely check in with Shay at some point, as I know she'll write a much more descriptive and humorous post than I'm capable of :-)

You all know my love of Nutcrackers, well, we weren't in the door five minutes and this guy was tossed into the trolley:

He's so much nicer than this guy that we saw later on:

According to the box, he's 1.9m (or 76") tall, and at over $400.00 he was definitely too rich for my budget right now. And if I'm completely honest, I don't think he's as cute as the little 32" guy we purchased :-)

Throughout the whole shopping trip, I was having doubts about whether I should bring the Nutcracker home, I don't know why, but it just seemed so extravagant! Now that he's in place though, I'm just so glad I bought him:

I'll have to take another pic so you can see how they all look together. Now that I've had a grizzle to some of my friends about Nutcrackers being harder to find this year, I'm seeing them in a few more places, but I'll have to restrain myself ... I really need to save some money for my vacation next year.

I skyped with Linda during the week, and I'll be booking my airfares shortly - DH will be booking some annual leave so he can holiday with the little guy while I'm away, it's all looking good!

Next week is my birthday, and for the first time ever my DH is going to be away. I have a couple of celebrations planned with friends and I'll be going out with my family too, so I won't be feeling lonely which is nice :-) I was chatting with the Hubster the other day telling him that I don't want a bunch of presents also because of the upcoming vacation, but he assured me that when he gets back, regardless of my desire for a minimalist birthday he'll choose me some new beads for my Pandora bracelets. He knows how much I love them and how the beads have special meaning for me depending on where they came from and who gifted them to me, isn't he a honey? :-)

And for the very last thing, here's a random picture that's in my phone from the other day, thought I'd share it:

I was trying to work out if I wanted to do any more Christmas decorating in the front rooms, and I've decided I'm going to leave them be for now. I need to tidy away those messy cords, and neaten up the quilt rack. It's amazing how you don't notice those things in real life, but in a picture they stand out like crazy.

Well, that's it from me for today, I'm going to get back on to the spider-web place-mat production line, so I'll check in really soon!

More Excitement!

A big thank you to my sweet friend Bridget - on two counts!

First up, she's at the Craft Fair today, and visited with my quilt. She snapped some pictures for me, as I'm just not sure when I'm going to get a chance to go there ...

My goodness it's a big quilt, and I have to say that I'm feeling quite proud that it's hanging nice and flat. It's a tough gig attaching a border to such a heavily pieced quilt, and Lizzy's amazing quilting was the icing on the cake :-)

And a gratuitous close up so you can see more of Lizzy's fantastic quilting. A ribbon for her, and one for me too :-) Sue Garman's pattern is just wonderful - and it was a delight for me to put the quilt top together - albeit a good deal faster than I anticipated I would.

I'm just so thrilled that my quilt did so well, I really hope I get an opportunity to visit with it before the show ends on Sunday.

And the second big thank you for Bridget: She knows my love of Nutcrackers, and my boundless enthusiasm to fill my home with them during the Christmas season ... well, she found one and gifted it to me:

He's front and centre there with the gold crown and green glittery legs - isn't he so very cute? I only have seven large Nutrackers (and about eleventy small ones on the tree) so it's not much of a collection really, but I really like them and see more in my future. There's one in Myer that's about a metre tall ... and at $100 is a little rich for me ... but trust me, I'll be there with bells on if he's still around in the post-Xmas sales!

Last of all - I'm waiting on a special parcel today - I may or may not (can't prove anything 'till they arrive) have ordered some shoes at around midnight on Wednesday. It's all for a good cause ... Guild's 20's night:

These will be perfect with the outfit I have planned - a red sheath dress with a black lace overlay, and a feather headband with a red rhinestone. Should be super fun. She shoes are Diana Ferrari's Lamour, and I purchased them from Birdsnest. I'm sad to say that they were the last pair. I think it was serendipity that the last pair they had were my size - they were meant to be :-)

**Just as I was typing this, the doorbell rang, and they have arrived ... OMG, they are beautiful!! Happy days!!**

Well, that's it from me, I have work to do in the sewing room today, and a bunch of chores to do, so I will chatter soon! xox

Thimbleberries Limited Edition Porcelain Stocking Ornaments

Just a quick note for my Thimbleberries loving friends out there - I've just created an Ebay listing for my set of Thimbleberries Porcelain Stocking Ornaments.

They just don't suit my decor any longer, and I know someone out there has probably been hunting for these for ages, you just don't see them around any more!

So, if these are something you're looking for, go ahead and check out the listing: Thimbleberries Limited Edition Porcelain Stocking Ornaments. Happy Shopping! xox

Gearing up for Christmas ...

Yesterday was the day of the Christmas Pageant in Adelaide, and that means one thing in this house ... it's time to start Xmas decorating. I think my children may riot if the tree didn't go up on pageant day, and fortunately this weekend they were just a little preoccupied, so they didn't mind that I was a day late. But here it is ... long term readers have seen it all before :-)

There is still a little tweaking to do - some filler ribbons etc, but we're pretty much there. Just need to get busy with the rest of the decorating now. You know, break out the garlands, the nutcrackers etc ...

Amy had the fun quote of the day ... "The tree still needs to be pyramid shaped, it can't have any tumors". I'm super fussy about decorating the tree, and it seems my apprentice is learning well :-)

And because we're starting to get into the Christmas spirit, I've pulled out a few FQ's to make some spiderweb placemats to give away - I have a number of them to make this year, I hope I can manage them all.

A while back I won a whole pile of Jinny Beyer FQ's in our guild show, and I will use these for some of the spiderwebs. They're not Christmas fabrics, but the colours work don't they?

Hopefully I'll get all the strips cut and sewed tonight, and then I'll cut the wedges tomorrow. Better run, chatter soon!

Excitement!

I have the most exciting news: I learned at the Guild presentation night last night that my quilt placed first in its category - Open Traditional Two Person. A big thank you to my sweet friend Lizzy, firstly for quilting my top so well, and secondly because I pinched this photo from her Facebook page :-)

Hopefully I'll be able to visit with all the quilts at the show next weekend and share a picture of the ribbon with you. And huge congratulations to all my prize winning friends! xox

Montmellick-ing ...

Okay - someone needs to tell me where the past week or so has gone - because I have no clue! I know I've worked - done chores - we're at tennis 6 times in a week - and I guess taking care of the house and fam ... but other than that, I just can't account for what I've been up to.

I can share that in spare moments I've been working on the Montmellick appliqué. I'm almost caught up now :-)

All the broderie perse is finished now, and I've done one side of the appliquéd petal shapes. Oddly, it isn't easy for me to find scraps of red in my stash - I know I have some French General bits and pieces, but I've put them aside for the tumbler project that I'm hand piecing. Maybe I'll have to start cutting into yardage at some point - oh the horror!! :-)

See the red paper pieced hexagons in those corner pieces? The flower shape in the margin of the photo is actually larger than the one closer to the centre of the photo. I thought it would be nice to make the flower shape on the larger square fit it better, so instead of the 1/2" hexies, I used 5/8" hexies. I probably could have gone to 3/4" to take it to the margin of the square, but after making all the hexies I was too lazy to change them :-)

I'm looking forward to the next instalment of the magazine coming out. Quilt Mania is a bi-monthly magazine and I've lost track of which month it's issued, but I feel sure it must be soon.

I have paperwork, housework and shopping on my agenda today - so I don't think there will be much stitching happening. Chatter soon! xox

Sunday, October 26, 2014

And now life can return to (something like) normal ...

Finally the big beastie "Omigosh! I still have scraps!" quilt is finished. I took it in to work on Thursday so the girls could have a looky - I had just finished the binding on Wednesday night:

You can see a little of the quilting on the bit that's overhanging the table ... but only if you look really carefully. This is one busy quilt!

And here you can just see the fabric I chose for the binding - it's a cute dark blue repro with a small beige pattern with red berries. I don't think it really would have mattered what fabric I used in the border and the binding - the piecing seems to really divert the eye.

Now that I'm done, I've been able to get busy with some more of the appliqué on the Di Ford Montmellick mystery. I'm getting really close to being done with the broderie perse now, and I'm thrilled!

Just a few little doodads to add in the top left hand corner, and a few motifs on the right that you can see there. And though you can't see, I need to add a few leaves to the bottom right corner piece. If I'm a good girl, I may be able to finish it tomorrow. And the next step will be to add the background for the next round. A whole bunch of appliqué melons. I'm looking forward to them.

But first I have to fix an oops in the pieced triangle border at the top ... I'm glad I noticed it before I got too much further ... can you see it??

The two hourglass units in the centre need to be taken out and rotated one quarter turn each. I have two lights next to each other, and two darks next to each other - oops! I would have kicked myself if I didn't find that until I was working on the quilting!

Well, that's all the exciting quilting news that's happening here. Apart from the belief that I've chosen my next project ... the Burnt Quilt, which is in Di Ford's Primarily Quilts book. We'll see if I actually make a start on that project ... my record for false quilt starts has not been the best lately ...

Chatter soon xox

Holiday Happenings

Hi all! School holidays mean I've had little time to myself, Camo and I have had a mini-break with my Mum, Nanna and Amy - we went down to Goolwa for a few days. Such a nice time, and I managed to find a sweet little quilt store too!

In the evenings there, I managed to finish up the binding on the Christmas Tree Skirt I made for my friend Kath, I'm just thrilled, as I can send it home with her hubby - all the guys are having a weekend away. So here's the finished skirt:

Don't forget that if you love it, the pattern is a quick and very inexpensive download at my Etsy store.

And yesterday I visited with my sweet friend Lizzy to see how Omigosh! is coming along. I'm thrilled with how Lizzy's quilting it, and I hung around a little while to help bury threads.

Here's my sweet friend at work:

And here are a couple of pictures up close of the fabrics, and the quilting too:

Because the quilt is so busy, it's hard to see the quilting very well, but I bet it'll look fabulous from the back. See that mid blue fabric above - that's the fabric from my first ever quilt I told you about a little while back.

The top narrow borders have been quilted too, but once again - busy fabrics make the quilting hard to see.

So, they're all the photos I have to share in my phone - I can't believe I didn't even manage to take any while we were on our little break. Over the next few days I'm going to be up to my eyeballs in binding, a label and a hanging sleeve for this quilt, so things could get a little quiet again. I promise I'll check in really soon!

Breakin' out the appliqué ...

Isn't it amazing how fast a weekend can fly by? Saturday was a lovely day, spent with the 'Not the Farmers Wife' stitching group. This time we were hosted by the lovely Loz, and a great time was had by all. I'm always so sketchy with a camera, but I'm sure you'll see pictures around blogland/Facebook from those who were clever enough to take pictures.

I did manage to get a fuzzy picture of Loz's delightful vintage quilts, aren't they stunning?

For the Pinterest aficionados among you, you may recognise the pink one there - it is famous on Pinterest, pinned from our dear friend Shay's blog. Some day there will be a pickle dish quilt in my future, I'm sure of it!

And then on Sunday, it was lunch and lounging at my parent's house. It was my Mum's birthday during the week, and though we visited on the actual day, it makes great sense to extend birthday celebrations as long as possible.

All this merriment meant that my stitching time has been limited, but you'll be pleased to know that I've gotten a few things done:

Kath's tree skirt is now quilted, so I just have to cut the opening, and bind it. Her hubby is visiting in the last weekend of the school holidays, so if I'm a really good girl, I will have it ready for him to take home. Fingers crossed!

And because I've been missing it, I've broken out the Di Ford mystery 'Montmellick' so I can catch up with everyone. Here's where I'm at:

Part five has come out in Quilt Mania, so once I've finished with the applique component from part three, I will put the next lot of background fabric in place and get busy with the applique melon shapes. If you're interested in seeing what the next round looks like, you can check out the Quilt Mania magazine website, or check out the Quilts - Di Ford on my Pinterest site. I just love pinning things on Pinterest - such great eye candy and inspiration.

Alrighty - I'm going to get busy working on some more applique while Camo is occupied, and later I'll find something we can do together. I do love school holidays!

New projects ...

This has been an incredibly busy week, and it's not quite over yet. Tomorrow however, I don't have so much on my schedule, so I'm going to kick back a little while Camo is at school. Next week brings the school holidays, so things will ramp up a bit in the social department, but at least we'll be able to sleep in at times :-)

After I finished the Omigosh! quilt top, I immediately got busy working on the next project on my list. I had promised my Paris loving friend Kath that I'd make her a tree skirt, and that I'd have it to her in time for this Christmas.

These are the fabrics I selected - actually, I chose them over a little while ...

I just love the Eiffel Tower fabric - it's super cute. I think it's a Lakehouse print, and sadly I really only just got enough for the project - I only have a small strip left.

And here's where I'm at with the tree skirt so far:

Just needs quilting, trimming and binding. This is a pattern I designed a while back, and is one of the most downloaded patterns on my Etsy store. If you feel like you'd like to make one, just click here.

Something else I've almost finished this week is a pair of socks I've been knitting for quite a while.

On the grey and white pair there, they'd been sitting at a point that always has me stymied. Each time I need to graft the toe, I have to check YouTube to remind myself how to do it. For some reason it just doesn't stick. I made myself get busy and finish that step and now I just have to weave in the ends. They're a gift for my sweet friend Vivienne. And because it's nice to have something on the needles at all times, I started a new pair immediately - I'm using some new-to-me sock yarn from the Bendigo Woollen Mills, and it's really lovely.

Last of all, at work today the lovely Victoria shared her show and tell, a project she has been hand piecing on all year:

Teeny tiny 3" LeMoyne star blocks. I'm just in love with them - the fabric choices are just delightful. Today we basted the quilt sandwich and Victoria is going to get busy hand quilting this gorgeous quilt.

Well, that's it from me for now - I really need an early night, so after I'm done making lunches, I'm hitting the sheets. Thank you all so much for your comments this week, they have all been just lovely. Chatter soon xox
